Mahindra & Mahindra, the behemoth of Indian SUVs, announced the new Marazzo.
Shark inspired, the Mahindra Marazzo is a MUV with a very premium finish and sleek looks. Designed by the Mahindra North American Technical Centre based in Michigan, and its Mahindra Technical Valley here in Chennai, it has taken in a lot of creative inputs from Pininfarina (of Ferrari fame). The car will be produced at M&M’s plant in Nashik and is expected to hit the Indian roads in Q2 of 2019.
The car has been a hot topic with a lot of test-models seen across Maharashtra. The company is said to have invested around Rs. 1500 crore behind the project, which it will launch at its dealerships Globally. It is the 3rd model based on the monocoque frame, similar to the XUV and KUV models.
The front has a shark-teeth style factored in with a combination of black and chrome as its signature. The tail lamp and antenna both have the very distinct shark-fin look. The instrument cluster has a purple theme and 3D light guides. The interiors are classy leatherette with perforation for better air circulation. A stylish rear air-conditioning unit will ensure the drive is cool and comfortable.
Touchscreen infotainment, projector lamps, climate control, steering mounted audio and cruise control are noticed on the trial vehicles. It is believed that the Marazzo will be powered by the signature 1.6 L mFalcon diesel engine which produces 125 hp power and 305 NM torque. And will be mated with a 6 speed manual gearbox with optional automatic transmission. M&M is still very tight lipped about the engine specs though.
Speaking at the name reveal, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, M&M Ltd. said, “The shark- inspired Marazzo symbolizes the next generation of aspirational Mahindra vehicles. A collaborative effort of Pininfarina, Mahindra Design Studio, MNATC and MRV, Marazzo is born of a vision to design a global vehicle with quality and refinement keeping in mind the aspirations of our customers.”
Targeted MUV MPV
The Marazzo will take on the Toyota Innova in the MUV market, or as we call it, the people carrier / maxi cab market. This market has been dominated by Toyota, primarily due to the quality of the Innova and its ease and low cost of maintenance. This is an area that Mahindra will have to work on strongly, given its history of maintenance related to the XUV500 and Scorpio.
With a expected price point between Rs. 12-15 lakhs, the Marazzo could be quite the head turner and gain in-roads quickly into the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga market. And will have a big eye on the Toyota Innova Crysta too.
How the Mahindra Marazzo will actually perform. only time will tell. We expect more information to come in a few months – keep checking for information soon.
